Recruitment fraud: an important warning for jobseekers

Recruitment fraud is intended to deceive individuals into providing money, financial details or sensitive personal information in connection with vacancies that do not exist. Fraudsters frequently impersonate reputable organisations, including TalentHawk, to make their approach appear legitimate.

You may be contacted by someone falsely claiming to be a TalentHawk consultant through email, social media, SMS, WhatsApp or an online job board. They may then attempt to obtain personal information, banking details or payment from you.

These scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated and can appear highly convincing. Recognising the warning signs is therefore an important step in protecting yourself from financial loss, identity theft and other forms of fraud.

Warning signs of recruitment fraud

Any communication concerning a job opportunity should be treated with caution if:

• You receive an unexpected advertisement, email, message, letter or telephone call promising you a job or guaranteed income.
• The sender’s profile contains a suspicious photograph, limited genuine information, little credible activity or no verifiable contact details.
• You are told that you can earn a substantial amount of money or achieve significant financial returns with minimal effort, often by using your personal computer.
• You are asked to disclose personal information or pay a fee to receive further details about the vacancy or obtain materials required to begin work.
• You are instructed to receive or transfer money on behalf of another person. This could constitute money laundering and should be reported immediately.
• A supposed recruiter contacts you unexpectedly from a generic email address, such as Gmail, Yahoo or Hotmail, rather than an official company domain.
• You are asked to provide personal or financial information or make a payment described as an administration fee, accreditation cost or similar charge.
• You are offered a highly paid position immediately and without completing a proper interview or selection process. Any offer that appears unusually attractive should be approached with extreme caution.
• The vacancy advertisement or accompanying message is poorly written or contains obvious spelling and grammatical errors.
• Someone criticises the quality of your CV and then asks you to pay for a new or rewritten version. TalentHawk does not provide this service.

If you receive a suspicious message claiming to be from TalentHawk

If you have any doubt about whether a communication from TalentHawk is genuine, do not provide personal information, make a payment or continue the conversation. Contact TalentHawk directly on 01825 713233 to verify the identity of the sender.

TalentHawk will never ask a candidate to make any form of direct payment. All email correspondence from a TalentHawk consultant will be sent from the official TalentHawk domain, using an address such as name.surname@TalentHawk.com.

If you believe you have been targeted by a recruitment scam

If you suspect that you have been approached as part of a recruitment scam, report the incident to Action Fraud, the UK’s national reporting centre for fraud and cybercrime.

If you have disclosed any personal or financial information to a suspected fraudster, report the matter to Action Fraud immediately.

If you have transferred any money, contact your bank without delay, explain that you may have been the victim of fraud and follow its instructions to protect your account.
